Commentary — 27 December 2011

Some years back, Mo’Kelly took actress Janet Hubert (the original Aunt Viv on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) to task for her book detailing her time working with film star Will Smith and her contention of how undesirable a person he is.

Mo’Kelly said it then and will say it again now.  Esther Rolle (and other celebrated Black actresses) endured far worse and offered far more class and grace in response.  It may or may not be true what Hubert has to say about Will Smith; we’ll likely never know.  What is clear is that the manner in which she publicly addresses the rift is not consistent with someone purporting to be a superior talent.

Recently when asked about why she was not at the Fresh Prince cast reunion dinner, she offered the following:

He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”

Esther Rolle never would have verbally undressed herself in such a manner, just to publicly undress a fellow, former cast member.
