Commentary — 27 July 2010

Maybe the caliber of membership has decreased relative to the sheer numbers of African-Americans in college, which have also dropped.  Maybe the talent pool is just too shallow or maybe…just maybe, our organizations have become too shallow in and of themselves.  I will say without a doubt that there is a measurable and despicable criminal element within my very own Omega Psi Phi; an element in direct contradiction

to everything my founders Oscar James Cooper, Frank Coleman, Edgar Amos Love and Dr. Ernest Everett Just championed.

Yup, I said it and I meant it.

It’s not the popular thing to say, but it needed to be said.

Mo’Kelly – 7.15.09

At our Grand Conclave this week, one of our 36-year old members was arrested for “indecent liberties.”  That’s the official read.  The “unofficial” account is that this fraternity brother groped a 15-year old girl.  The saddest part in looking at the mug shot…Mo’Kelly knows this brother.  From what Mo’Kelly knows, the man was not registered to attend the convention and was simply a congregant.  As it would be unfair to attribute the actions of one to describe the body, Mo’Kelly was already on the record as to a certain “element” within my fraternity.  This has to stop or we will be extinct…period.

Raleigh, N.C. — A Greensboro man is accused of touching a young girl inappropriately while attending a fraternity convention in downtown Raleigh.

According to arrest warrants, Javelin Edric Hall, 36, of 5052 Bartholomew’s Lane, was attending the Omega Psi Phi convention on Fayetteville Street when the alleged incident occurred Saturday afternoon.

Javelin is currently a faculty member at nearby North Carolina A&T University.

The girl’s mother said the 15-year-old was raising money for a church at the time of the incident.

Hall is charged with taking indecent liberties with a child. He was being held Sunday in the Wake County jail under a $25,000 bond and is due in court Monday.
